Hello world, this the first blog post for the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds
The Winston-Salem Fairgrounds is a venue that hosts over 100 events a year, and is well known of course for the Dixie Classic Fair, but this past weekend was on that lands as a bright spot for the City of Winston-Salem.

Last weekend the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex Theatre welcomed a sold out crowd of 2,200 guests for a captivating performance by Crowder, a contemporary Christian artist who provides and inspiring & engaging experience to his listeners. The Grammy nominated, billboard chart climbing star is on tour following the release of his latest album, I Know A Ghost which is now available everywhere.
This was the first time since 2017 that the Fairgrounds has sold out the Annex Theatre when Travis Tritt rolled into Winston-Salem. It takes a certain type of artist to put thousands of people in the same room and create a spiritually uplifting experience for them.
It also takes a special venue to create an environment that is welcoming, creates intimacy and provides everyone in attendance with the best seat in the house. The Annex Theatre is one of the few venues where attendees in the nosebleeds are standing, singing and dancing during the full length of the concert as if their seats are front row.

The intimate environment of the Annex Theater makes it a candidate for an array of concert genres. This summer they are welcoming, Pam Tillis & Lorrie Morgan and Gatlin Brothers as a part of their Classic Country Concert Series, along with The War & Treaty on July 30th in partnership with the National Black Theatre Festival.

More than 100 archers, both adult and youth, from throughout North Carolina will converge on the Fairgrounds Education Building on Saturday, Jan. 11, for the North Carolina 2020 USA Archery and Junior Olympic Archery Development Championships. The competition will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $1 and parking will be $5.
Also competing will be some guest guest archers from Virginia and South Carolina.
Competitors include several Olympic hopefuls, said George Hutcherson, the coach of the Bandits Junior Olympic Archery Development Club in Winston-Salem, which is serving as the host organization for the championships. “We have some archers coming who are the elite of the elite,” Hutcherson said. “Come support North Carolina archers and cheer them on to a bright future in the sport.”

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s National Archery in Schools (NASP) state tournament will occur on Feb. 14–15 in the Education Building at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds.
Approximately 800 students from 32 schools , including Elementary, Middle School and High School divisions, will compete for the title of North Carolina State Champion. Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female individual archers, and to the top-scoring team in each division.
Elementary schools will participate on Friday, Feb. 14 beginning at 8:00 a.m. Middle and high schools are scheduled to take aim beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15.
The National Archery in Schools Program teaches and promotes international-style target archery as part of an in-school curriculum to improve educational performance and participation in the shooting sports among students in grades 4-12. MENTOR, OHIO- The Carolina Thunderbirds, proud members of the Federal Prospects Hockey League, outlasted the Mentor Ice Breakers on Sunday afternoon 4-3 at the Mentor Civic Ice Arena.
“The guys who played today, they really battled,” said head coach Andre Niec, “It shows that we are a team, a real team, a family.”
After suspensions levied against Michael Bunn, Konner Haas and Jan Salak, Carolina turned to Kelly Curl , Vinnie D’Andrea and Niec to fill the voids. Even with the last-minute additions, the Thunderbirds still skated with only 13 on the bench.
The game started tremendously for the Thunderbirds with Jan Krivohlavek scoring 3:04 into the first period, on the first goal of the game.
Things took a turn from there.
After the goal, Patrik Polivka suffered a lower-body injury reaching for a puck. He was helped off the ice by both Mentor trainers and would not return.
Further complicating matter, Carolina was called for five penalties in the first period, spending half of the frame in the box.
Steven Fowler and Declan Conway scored on the man-advantages, breaking an 0-for-20 streak on the powerplay for the Ice Breakers. Mentor led 2-1 after the first period.
Jordan Brant was solid in goal in the second period, turning away 10 shots in the second. Conway would score again with eight minutes remaining in the period to make it 3-0 Mentor.
After the intermission, Mentor took back-to-back penalties within the first five minutes of the third period. The Thunderbirds scored when Jo Osaka shot a puck off of a defender and into the next to make it 3-2, just 3:06 into the third.
Daniel Martin deflect Petr Panacek’s shot into the net just 1:32 later to tie the game. Stan Vlasov assisted on both goals to earn his 100th career FPHL point.
Jake Mullen was tremendous in goal in the third period, coming up with a huge save on an Alexander Morrow breakaway with 1:20 to go in the game. Mullen would make eight saves in the third period and one more in overtime.
The Thunderbirds owned the overtime period, but were unable to score and the game went to a shootout.
Carolina’s Jan Krivohlavek and Petr Panacek scored on the first two shots of the shootout prompting Mentor coach Iain Duncan to pull Brant for Frankie McClendon.
McClendon stopped 4-of-5 shots he faced in the shootout, as Daniel Klinecky scored the game-winner for Carolina in the seventh inning of the breakaway contest.
The Thunderbirds earn a season sweep over the Ice Breakers, having beat Mentor 17 straight times dating back to last season.
Carolina faces Danbury on the road for another three-game set on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.

The Winston-Salem Fairgrounds will host 6 concerts beginning May 22 and ending August 14. Artists include Montgomery Gentry with Little Texas, John Michael Montgomery with Whiskey Foxtrot, Joe Nichols and Mark Chesnutt with Jukebox Rehab for the 2020 Classic Country Concert Series. Also performing this summer Switchfoot, a well know rock and Christian group and Rend Collective, a popular Christian music group. All concerts will be held indoors in the Annex Theatre at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds.
Tickets for all concerts Series will go on sale Friday March 6 10 AM through Ticketmaster and the Fairgrounds Box Office, with tickets for individual show tickets starting at $25 and a 4 show bundle starting at $72.
