NC MISSIONS OF MERCY

The North Carolina Missions of Mercy (NCMOM) portable free dental program is an outreach program of the North Carolina Dental Society. The program is sponsored by the North Carolina Dental Health Fund. The Mission of the North Carolina Dental Health Fund, (NCDHF) is to directly address the “Access to Care” problem facing our states’ most underserved. The NCDHF is a 501 (c) (3), charitable organization, founded and governed by the North Carolina Dental Society. It addresses the Access to Care problem, by raising funds and awareness to support its’ three primary programs; North Carolina Missions of Mercy, (NCMOM), Give-Kids-A-Smile, and The Elder Care Initiative. Combined, all three programs have donated more than $29,000,000 in free dental services, to over 200,000 North Carolinians, utilizing support from well over 32,000 volunteers state wide. We are 100% supported by the Good Will of North Carolinians, foundations and corporations.
NCMOM is a grassroots effort, dependent on volunteers, with funding from grants and donations. Since its beginning in 2003 the program has received national and statewide recognition.
Currently, NCMOM has enough equipment to set up a 80 chair full dental clinic including digital x-ray, sterilization, and all instrumentation and supplies. Clinics are generally set up with 20 to 80 chairs and services are provided for 300 to 3000 patients per 2-day event. The volunteers include dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, laboratory technicians and scores of professional and general volunteers from across the state. Additionally, the program enjoys a good relationship with the UNC School of Dentistry and ECU School of Dental Medicine through their student volunteer organizations. Dental students participate as volunteer providers during each clinic and are an important part of the overall program.
The North Carolina Missions of Mercy (NCMOM) offers free dental treatment to those in financial need who have few or no other options for care. In North Carolina, the problem of access to dental care has reached nearly epidemic proportions. More than one million adults and children have no source for regular dental care. Many have never seen a dentist, and many suffer the complications of advanced dental disease. The NCMOM program is staffed by volunteers from across the State and funded by tax deductible donations to the NC Dental Health Fund.
