From the NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Forsyth County:
It’s almost Fall Y’all.
September is the beginning of cool season maintenance.
Cool season lawns should be fertilized. Core Aeration, liming (cool and warm season lawns) thatch control and renovation can be done for cool season lawns. Pre emergence can be applied for cool season weeds. Diseases and insects are still going strong. (https://turfpathology.ces.ncsu.edu/turfgrass-diseases/, https://ncturfbugs.wordpress.ncsu.edu/). Follow pesticide labels, they are the law. The plant disease and Insect clinic (https://pdic.ces.ncsu.edu/) is your ultimate resource when all else comes up short.
Container grown ornamentals can be planted and fertilized. Dead, diseased or damaged is about the only pruning at this time. Ornamental diseases and pests are still active but tapering off, (https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/extension-gardener-handbook/5-diseases-and-disorders), to help you learn about and manage issues.
It’s time to plant cool season veggies and annual ornamentals. Pre-emergence for weeds in the flower beds can be done,
The Fall Plant sale is on the 13th at the extension office at 1450 Fairchild Road, Winston Salem, NC
Hope to see you at the market!
